The Ashmole Bestiary
Unkown artist

This manuscript was an exhibit in‘The Ark’, the house in Lambeth where the Tradescants displayed their collection. Visitors could see the remains of numerous species of birds, fishes and ‘four-footed beasts’, and even ‘Two feathers of the Phoenix tayle’. The miniatures which adorn the pages of the manuscript are among the finest of their kind, and the depictions of fabulous beasts such as the griffin, the dragon, the basilisk, the unicorn and the phoenix, vividly painted within burnished gold grounds, have proved longer lasting than the more ephemeral curiosities of The Ark.
