The Lonely Mountain
J.R.R. Tolkien

1937

This is the southern aspect of the Lonely Mountain, where the River Running flows out of the Front Gate and loops around the ruins of the town of Dale. Smaug flies overhead keeping a watchful eye on his domain.

This drawing of the Lonely Mountain was too heavily inked to be included in the published work and a different line drawing of the front gate was used instead.
