Peering into the crater of Stromboli
Unknown artist

Count de Bylandt-Palstercamp used cut-away views of steaming craters to illustrate

his geometrical theory of volcanoes. He speculated that hot magma and gas

emerged from volcanoes under the action of a mysterious magnetic force. The idea

never gained acceptance. Bylandt-Palstercamp, Comte A de, Théorie des volcans,

Atlas,1836. F.G. Levralut, Paris.
