The Forest of Lothlorien in Spring
J.R.R. Tolkien

1940s

The woodland realm of Lothlórien is described in The Lord of the Rings as 'the heart of elvendom on earth'. Tolkien drew these mallorn trees not for publication but for pleasure, 'I am (obviously) much in love with plants and above all trees, and always have been.' MS. Tolkien Drawings 89, fol.12. Reproduced with kind permission of The Tolkien Estate Limited for the Bodleian Libraries exhibition Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth.
