Marco Polo sets sail from Venice
Johannes and his school

The city glows like a vision in the imagination of a medieval illuminator, Johannes, working probably in London at the start of the 15th century.

In his glorious frontispiece to a manuscript of Marco Polo’s Description of the World in French prose, the explorers leave Venice’s familiar sights as they set sail in 1271 towards the marvellous East.
